Mercer Leads SoCon in Spring Academic All-Conference Selections

Mercer places 71 student-athletes on spring academic all-conference team
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer University led the Southern Conference with 71 student-athletes who earned 2018 Spring Academic All-Conference honors, as the league announced its selections Monday afternoon.

Mercer's 71 spring honorees also gave the Bears a league-leading 113 academic all-conference selections for the 2017-18 academic year. It is the third straight year that Mercer has led the SoCon in total academic all-conference selections (113 in 2016-17; 97 in 2015-16).

Five Mercer programs – men's lacrosse (nine), men's tennis (six), women's tennis (six), women's basketball (five) and men's golf (four) – led their respective sports in academic all-conference selections. Three of Mercer's individual spring honorees earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages as well. The Bears were followed by Western Carolina (62) and The Citadel (57) for total spring selections.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

Mercer's 71 spring selections contributed to a new SoCon record of 570 honorees across the league; the previous record was 479 in spring 2017.
