Stephenson’s Hat Trick Leads Mercer to 7-0 Shutout Over Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a total team effort, five different Bears found the back of the net as Mercer put on a clinical 7-0 shutout over Alabama State Friday night at the ASU Soccer Complex.

Woman of the Match
Freshman midfielder Pace Stephenson recorded her first career goal in the 16th minute en route to a hat trick.
How It Happened
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board as Abigail Zoeller connected with Brie Pavol off a corner kick in the 4th minute. In the 16th minute, Pavol dished a ball into the box to find Pace Stephenson who found the back of the net for her first career goal. Mercer extended to a 3-0 lead in the 30th minute as Jasmine Spence scored her first goal of the season.
Mercer finished the first half with a 12-0 shot advantage and a 5-1 edge in corners.
The Bears continued to apply pressure coming out of the break. In the 49th minute, Stephenson drove past a pair of defenders and beat the keeper for her second goal of the night. It was only a matter of two minutes later that Stephenson connected with her third to complete the hat trick.
Jasmine Spence picked up another point on the night as she connected with Caroline Smith to extend the Bears lead to 6-0 with 40 minutes remaining in the match. Mercer would add another in the 60th minute as Madeline Alhamra scored from outside the box.
The Bears would continue to dominate possession but the score line held, with Mercer picking up a 7-0 victory. With the win, Mercer improves to 5-3-1 on the season.
