9/16/2018 10:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
KENNESAW, Ga. – Abigail Zoeller's late equalizer helped Mercer draw even with Kennesaw State, 1-1, Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
Stat of the Match
Mercer outshot Kennesaw State, 17 to 12, with 9 shots on goal, over the 110 minutes of play.
Â
Woman of the Match
Sophomore midfielder Abigail Zoeller continued to impress on the offensive side netting her 6th career goal to equalize the match in the 81st minute.
How It Happened
Both teams came out firing, as Mercer keeper Payton Jamieson was called upon early to snag a save in the first minute of play. Abigail Zoeller ripped one from just outside the box in the 3rd minute, but the Owls' keeper was there to prevent the opener.
Â
Kennesaw State broke through in the 9th minute, countering the Bears and finishing to claim the early lead. Mercer's next chance would come in the 26th minute as Zoeller found her way past the keeper but her shot was blocked by one of the Owls' backs. Itzy Sanchez-Gracia saw a chance of her own, flicking the ball towards goal in the 37th minute, but once again the keeper made the save.
Mercer finished the first half with a 6-5 shot advantage and with two corners in the period.
The Bears continued to apply pressure coming out of the break. However, Mercer wouldn't see a real chance until Kylie Buchanan fired one just high of goal in the 66th minute. In the 72nd minute, Jordyn Ebert was called upon and came up clutch, snagging the save to keep the Bears in striking distance.
Â
Mercer finally found the late equalizer, as Smith connected with Zoeller in the 80th minute. The Bears nearly snuck a late winner in with Pace Stephenson drilling a ball off the crossbar in the 89th minute.
Â
The Bears entered overtime for the fourth time this season. Neither team would find the back of the net over the extra 20 minutes of play, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.
Â
With the result, Mercer improves to 5-3-2 on the season.
