Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer scored on its first shot of the match as Josh Harrison found the back of the net for the first time this season. Arteaga delivered the set piece into the far right side of the box where Thompson elevated above the defenders to head it far post. Harrison was there to clean up the play with a soft flick into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Bears carried the one-goal lead into the locker room, later doubling the advantage in the 71st minute of play. Mercer received its second goal from Toledo Jr., his second tally of the season. Harrison sent the ball into the box where Martineau batted the pass down with his chest, right toward the foot of Toledo Jr. The redshirt-sophomore rifled a shot on frame, past the keeper for the 2-0 Bears' advantage.
Â
The Blue Hose scored two goals in the next three minutes to even the match at two apiece as Clement Vannier and Sergio Pinto found the back of the net.
Â
With a potential for overtime lurking, Martineau found the back of the net in the 81st minute, his third goal of the season and first since the opening weekend. The true freshman's strike came off a corner kick with Toledo Jr. delivering the ball into the box. Martineau rose up to the occasion and laced a header into the far side of the net, away from the outstretched arms of Jan Hoffelner for the 3-2 victory.
