Mercer earned its first home win of the new season
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Men's Soccer team walked away victorious on a rainy Saturday night, defeating in-state rival Georgia Southern by the final score of 3-1. The Bears improved to 6-2-2 following the win, while also snatching the first win at home this season. Georgia Southern falls to 3-4-1 after the defeat.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Despite scoring three goals, Mercer was outshot 17-10 on the match, including 13-4 in the second half. The Bears tallied six first-half strikes, four of which were on target and two finding the back of the net.
MAN OF THE MATCH
JR DeRose had a career night for Mercer, coming away with seven saves in the match. DeRose registered one save in the opening 45 minutes, but was tested with six saves in the final 45. DeRose was critical in the win, turning away shot after shot in the second half and keeping the ball from bouncing away in the wet conditions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears scored in the 19th minute of action when Trevor Martineau found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Martineau flicked a header into the near side of the net after a deliverance from Emmet Johnson. Martineau's goal capped off a strong week in which the freshman scored twice and registered one assist for five points.
The Bears doubled their lead in the 23rd minute of play thanks to Kobe Perez's third strike of the season. Once again, it was Johnson who delivered the initial ball into the box. Leo Toledo Jr. then flicked the header towards Perez who rifled a shot into the far corner for the 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles turned the tides in their favor in the 85th minute after Javier Carbonell netted his 10th goal of the season to trim the Mercer lead in half.
While playing keep away in the final two minutes of play, the Bears put the icing on the cake when Ricardo Packer Jr. broke through the defense and scored his first collegiate goal to put Mercer back on top with just 44 ticks left on the clock.
