Mercer concludes the Bradley invitational with an 0-1-1 record
PEORIA, Ill. – The Mercer Bears yielded their first loss of the 2018 campaign, dropping a 2-1 decision to Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Bradley Invitational. The Bears finished the tournament with a 0-1-1 record, falling to 4-1-1 on the season.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The match proved to be an even battle as both teams registered 14 shots apiece, with Mercer holding a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The two competitors also attempted seven corner kicks each throughout the 90 minutes of action.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Roberto Arteaga delivered the lone goal for the Bears, notching his second penalty-kick goal of the season. Arteaga's goal was his second of the season and provided Mercer with the early 1-0 advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer tested Eastern Illinois' Jonathan Burke early on as Kobe Perez placed a shot on target, forcing Burke to come up with the save to keep Mercer off the board. The Bears broke through in the 13th minute after Burke picked up a yellow card in the box, allowing the Orange & Black a shot at the penalty kick. Arteaga ensured the Bears' advantage, burying his second penalty kick of the season for the early 1-0 lead.
Mercer had a couple of chances to extend its lead in the 19th and 27th minute as Michael Ille's shot was turned away by Burke and Kobe Perez's strike banged off the crossbar. The Panthers then capitalized on the missed opportunity with a goal of their own in the 36th minute thanks to Kris Luke's first goal of the season.
Defense was the story in the second half as both squads registered just three shots in the first 35 minutes of the second frame. However, the fourth shot by Eastern Illinois proved to be the difference maker as Shady Omar found the back of the net for the first time this season in the 84th minute, providing the Panthers with the 2-1 advantage.
Mercer was able to apply pressure in the final minutes of the match, however each attempt at the equalizer was blocked or sailed wide of the frame, denying the Bears a chance at extending the contest into extra time.
