Online publication also tabs RJ Yeager, Angelo DiSpigna with individual preseason honors
MACON, Ga. – Mercer was picked to win the Southern Conference and RJ Yeager and Angelo DiSpigna were tabbed with preseason conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively, by Perfect Game USA on Wednesday.
Â
The Bears – who have won three SoCon regular season titles and one SoCon tournament title since joining the league in 2015 – were picked ahead of all other eight SoCon teams in the online publication's conference preview. Mercer went 38-22 overall and reached the SoCon Championship title game last season.
Â
Yeager has now been recognized as the preseason SoCon Player of the Year twice leading up to the 2019 campaign as D1Baseball gave him the honor on Jan. 24. The shortstop started all 60 games last season and slashed .324/.410/.458 en route to being named to the 2018 SoCon Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches.
Â
DiSpigna, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., was a three-year letterwinner at Brookwood High School and is expected to play third base for the Bears this spring.
Â
In addition to Yeager, senior first baseman Brandon Michie, graduate senior outfielder Kel Johnson, and senior pitcher Nick Spear were named to the Perfect Game USA Preseason All-SoCon Team.
Â
The Bears open the season with a three-game home series against Evansville on Feb. 15-17 at OrthoGeorgia Park.
