Men’s Soccer Falls in Overtime to Wofford

The Bears drop its SoCon Opener to Wofford
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer men's soccer dropped its fourth overtime game of the season on Tuesday night when Wofford defeated the Bears, 3-2. Wofford scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to defeat Mercer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears (8-4-0, 0-1-0 SoCon) scored the first goal of the contest in the 12th minute of action. Trevor Martineau added to his assist total as he found Dawson Gideon for a goal. Gideon beat the Terriers goalie to the lower-left corner of the goal.
Twelve minutes later, Wofford (3-8-1, 1-0-1 SoCon) answered back. After the Bears were called for a foul, the Terriers set up a set piece from just outside the box. Lucas Altman took the kick and beat JR DeRose to the upper right corner tying the game at 1-1. The Bears and Terriers would take the 1-1 tie into halftime.
In the 65th minute of the match, the Terriers were called for a foul in the box. Martineau lined up for the penalty kick and Grant Wollam made a diving save, keeping the game tied at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 80th minute of the match. Dylan Gaither beat the Terriers goalie to the lower-left corner for Mercer's second goal of the game. Ousman Jabang and Leo Toledo Jr. picked up the assists on the goal.
With 20 seconds left and a foul by the Bears, Wofford took a free kick and Altman sent the ball in the box. After it bounced off multiple players, Ole Berg found the loose ball and scored tying the game at 2-2 and forcing overtime.
Early in the first overtime period, the Bears were called for a foul resulting in a free kick for the Terriers. Eduardo Velasco found Ben Nickol who scored giving the Terriers a 3-2 win over the Bears.
NOTABLES
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they host Belmont. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Betts Stadium in the SoCon Home Opener.
