Bears Fall to Western Carolina in Fifth Set at Home

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears volleyball team went 2-3 (23-25, 28-26, 25-21, 12-15) against Western Carolina at Hawkins Arena Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One (23-25) | Mercer fought hard in the first set. Kills from Annie Karle and Jaida Howell put Mercer in a four-point lead. They fell behind but managed to gain their grounding with a huge kill from Jaida Howell, tying the score. Western Carolina came out on top ending the set 23-25.

Set Two (28-26) | Mercer took a two-point lead near the beginning of the set. They fell behind, but a kill by Annie Karle tied them up with Western Carolina. Another kill by Jaida Howell gave the Bears a one-point lead. Annie Karle's unassisted kill puts Mercer at 23-22. Brittany Major ends the set 28-26 with a kill.

Set Three (25-21) | Mercer started off on top in the beginning of set three. The Catamounts climbed their way back, but a block from Jaida Howell and Malia Randolph tied the score. The Bears took the lead and a kill by Annie Karle brings the score to 18-12. Mercer took the set 25-21 with a kill by Brittany Major.

Set Four (21-25) |The Bears start off trying to get on top. They took a three-point lead with 13-10. Western Carolina climbed their way back on top and took the lead 20-23. Mercer put up a fight but fell in set four to the Catamounts with a score of 21-24.

Set Five (12-15) | The Bears started the set in the lead. They fell behind, but a block by Jaida Howell tied it up 8-8. Another block by Jaida Howell and Malia Randolph tied it up again 11-11. Mercer did their best but fell to Western Carolina 12-15.

NOTABLES

Annie Karle and Roberta Todd are tied with kills per set, both are set at 2.85.
Malia Randolph brings her assist total to 392 on the season.
Annie Karle leads the team in three categories; kills, service aces, and digs.
Mercer as a team, has recorded 808 kills, 100 more than their opponents on the season.
Alexia Morey still leads the team in blocks with 58.0.

UP NEXT
The Bears will take on ETSU at home on Saturday October 5 at 6 p.m.
