Women’s Soccer Advances to SoCon Semifinals

Mercer scored the winning goal in double-overtime
MACON, Ga. – Ally Fordham scored her fourth goal of the season lifting the Mercer women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over fifth seed Western Carolina on Sunday evening at Betts Stadium. The win for the Bears improved its home record to 11-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears (16-3) and Catamounts (11-8) traded shot attempts in the first half. WCU outshot Mercer 7-5 in the half, but both teams had two shots on goal and the goalkeepers made the saves. The contest went scoreless into halftime.

Both teams kept the offensive pressure up in the second half as the Bears outshot the Catamounts, 7-6, but neither team scored. We headed to overtime and after the first ten minutes neither team could mount an offensive attack; we went to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, WCU had four shots with one being on goal. After the Catamounts were called for a foul, the Bears took advantage. Abigail Zoeller took the free kick and sent the ball into the box, where Ally Fordham headed the ball over the Catamounts goalie for the game-winning goal. The Bears came away with a 1-0 victory.

The Bears return to action on Friday, November 8 when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the SoCon Semifinals. The Bears face the Bulldogs of Samford at 4 p.m. from the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

NOTABLES
- The win over WCU extends the Bears program record wins in a single season to 16. The previous high was set in 2014 with 14 wins. The 16 wins are the most in the SoCon this season.
- The win for Mercer was the first win over Western Carolina since Oct. 6, 2017, when the Bears defeated the Catamounts, 3-2, in Cullowhee, N.C.
- The Bears now have won 16 matches this season. The 16 wins are tied for second most this season in the NCAA. Stanford leads the NCAA with 17 wins.
- With the win, the Bears went a perfect 11-0 at Betts Stadium.
- Fourth seed Mercer advanced to the SoCon Semifinals for the first time since the 2016 season. They will look for its second win of the season against Samford on Friday at UNCG. The contest will be on ESPN+
