Mercer beats Kennesaw State in home opener
Macon, Ga. – The Mercer Bears clawed back to take down in-state rivals Kennesaw State, 2-1, in double overtime Thursday night at Betts Stadium.
In the 109th minute, freshman Ciara Whitley broke away from the Owls defense then put a shot on goal that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net to seal the victory for Mercer (1-0-0).
Kennesaw State (0-1-0) took an early lead in the match when Erin Harris scored the first and only Owls goal in the 16th minute. The Bears retaliated at the 53:20 mark when Ally Fordham scored the equalizer on assists from Sarah Adcock and Abigail Zoeller.
Woman of the Match
After letting one sneak by her early, Jordyn Ebert bounced back to stop 11 Owl shots on goal on the night – her best single-game mark since Sept. 3, 2017, at Marquette, when she recorded a career-high 13 saves.
Notables
Quotable – Mercer head coach Tony Economopoulos
"First off, it was a great atmosphere. I want to thank the fans, the students, the parents that came out tonight to create an awesome atmosphere. We played a very tough team in Kennesaw State and I was very proud of our team. We grinded it out even after conceding a goal early; we responded very well in the second half. We told them in the locker room it was going to have to be a team effort tonight and our team never quit. The whole team gets this win tonight, so I'm very proud of them."
Up Next
Mercer will head up north to Knoxville to take on Tennessee Volunteers Sunday, Aug 25 at Regal Soccer Stadium. The match is schedule to kick off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
