Defense is Key
Mercer has been one of the most active teams on the defensive end of the court. The Bears lead the SoCon in blocks (117, 4.9 per game) and steals (207, 8.6 per game) while ranking 25th in the nation in total blocks and blocks per game.
Â
Shannon Titus leads the team in both categories with 66 steals and 39 blocks. She leads the SoCon in steals and is second in the conference in blocks. Jaron Dougherty is also among the SoCon's best, ranking fourth in both categories with 40 steals and 34 blocks.
Â
Thrice As Nice
Jaron Dougherty recently became the first player in the 2019-20 season to be named the SoCon Player of the Week three times after being recognized on Tuesday. She averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds last week and led the Bears to a pair of wins over Wofford and Furman. Dougherty also earned the award on Jan. 7 and Jan. 28.
Â
Dougherty has been one of the most consistent scorers for Mercer throughout the season thus far, averaging a team-high 15.6 points per game. The Buford, Ga., native has posted team highs in 20-point games (8) and double-doubles (7), while reaching double figure points in 17-of-24 games this year.
Â
The sophomore forward has been on a tear lately, averaging 17.5 points over the last 13 games, reaching double digits in 11 games and posting 20 points five times. She set a new career high on Jan. 25 with 29 points against Chattanooga.

Last Time Out

The last player to accomplish that feat was Teanna Robinson against Lipscomb on Feb. 8, 2014.
Â
Mercer was able to take advantage of the Paladins in transition as they outscored Furman in fast break points, 21-1, and held the advantage in points off turnovers at 11-4.
