Ross Cummings granted fifth year of eligibility
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's basketball senior Ross Cummings was granted a medical hardship by the Southern Conference on Friday and will be able to compete for the Bears during the 2020-21 season.
Â
Cummings appeared in six games for the Bears during the 2019-20 campaign before being shut down because of injury. He averaged 9.5 points per game and hit 11 three-pointers. Prior to the season, Cummings was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.
Â
Over his career at Mercer, Cummings has made 173 three-pointers, the fourth most in program history. He is 84 three-pointers away from being Mercer's all-time career three-point leader. Currently, Langston Hall holds the record with 256 made three-pointers.
Â
During the 2018-19 season, Cummings started all 31 games and averaged 17.4 points per game. He hit 101 three-pointers, which was the second-most made in a single season in school history.
Â
On three different occasions, Cummings set new career-highs in scoring. On Nov. 27, 2018, against Brewton-Parker, he scored 31 points. The next career-high came on Jan. 10 against Western Carolina when he poured in 36 points. A month and a half later, he scored 37 points, setting another career-high against Chattanooga.
Â
All three career games for Cummings came during home games. His 37-point contest at Hawkins Arena on Feb. 23, 2019 is second highest amount of points scored by a Mercer player on their home court. The only player to score more was James Florence who scored 39 points on Feb. 16, 2007.
