Bears open up the season with a loss to the Flames
PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. – After having its first two scheduled matches postponed, the Mercer women's tennis team opened its spring season on Sunday in a neutral site match with Liberty. The Flames defeated the Bears, 6-1.
Opening the match with doubles play, the Bears dropped the first two. The Bears' No. 1 doubles team of Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville earned a hard-fought win. The match was tied 6-6 against Eloise Saraty and Alexandra Almborg and went to a tie-breaker. In the tiebreaker the Bears came back and won 7-4, however, as a team they dropped the doubles point.
In singles play, freshman Lekha Varudandi battled at No. 5 singles. Varudandi forced a tiebreaker in the first set before dropping the set, 7-6 (7-5).
The Bears got their lone point of the day at No. 2 singles. Junior Alara Hollyfield came out and took set one, 6-2 over Tiffany Nguyen. In the second set, Nguyen played Hollyfield tough, but Hollyfield came out on top 7-5.
