Mercer picks up first win of the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mercer women's tennis team claimed its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Alabama State on Wednesday afternoon at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center in Montgomery.

The Bears took the first doubles match of the day when Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville won 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. After Alabama State took No. 2 doubles, it came down to the third and final doubles match.

In a tight battle, the Bears duo of Lauren Rich and Ericka Chavarria pulled off a 7-6 (5) in a tiebreaker to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles action the Bears opened its lead up. Alara Hollyfield won No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 and Courville came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles putting Mercer ahead 3-0. Freshman Ashley Popham clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No. 6 singles.

Mercer added wins in No. 3 singles (Lauren Rich), 6-1, 6-3 and No. 5 singles (Lekha Varudandi) 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-6.
