The Bears will open the regular season on Feb. 7
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Mercer women's soccer team played five matches in the fall and used Friday afternoon's contest at Jacksonville as a tune-up for the upcoming spring season.Â
The Bears and Dolphins played three 30-minute periods in the exhibition contest, which ended in a draw.
"I was proud of the team's work rate and effort," said head coach Tony Economopoulos. "Training sessions and playing against teammates is great, but it is always best to play an outside opponent so that we can identify key strengths and weaknesses before the regular season begins. Our team has been working hard in training and has made tremendous strides. We are excited to open the season at UAB next Sunday and appreciate Jacksonville having us for an exhibition today."
The Bears are set to begin the regular season in Alabama next Sunday, February 7, when they take on the Blazers from Conference USA. Mercer and UAB played in October in Macon. Mercer will play for non-conference contests with UAB being the only one on the road. After traveling to Birmingham, the Orange & Black will host Wesleyan (Feb. 11), Kennesaw State (Feb. 21) and Troy (Feb. 28). Mercer will kick off SoCon play with three consecutive road matches - at Furman, (March 5), Wofford (March 7) and The Citadel (March 12) before welcoming UNCG to Betts Stadium on March 19.
The Southern Conference will announce its preseason all-conference on Monday in advance of the regular season.Â
