Preseason Favorites
Mercer was picked by both the league coaches and media to cut down the nets in March in Asheville, N.C. From the perspective of the coaches, the Bears collected five of the eight first-place votes, and eight of the 15 from the media.
New Season, New Bears
There will be plenty of new faces at Hawkins Arena for the 2021-22 season, as Mercer welcomes eight new student-athletes – Kinley Fisher, Endia Banks, Erin Houpt, Erin Gutierrez, Kassidy Jones, Nigeria Harkless, Ashlee Locke and Lauren McNamara-Clement – to campus.
Last Time Out
Mercer fought hard and escaped App State with a 61-57 win for their first victory of the season. Three Bears – Jaron Dougherty, Shannon Titus and Sierra Votaw – put up double-doubles to lead the team over the Mountaineers. Dougherty and Votaw both contributed 15 points to the cause. As a team, Mercer claimed 21 second chance points and 60 rebounds – 36 of which were on the defensive end – en route to the four-point win. The Bears' bench came up big with 22 points to aid the starters.
Series History
This is the sixth all-time meeting between the Bears and Trojans. Mercer holds a 5-1 stronghold on the series and have won the last five between the two following Troy's win in their inaugural meeting. In their last tangle, Mercer took a 83-68 win in the Women's Basketball Invitational at Hawkins Arena in March of 2015.
Scouting the Trojans
Troy is off to a perfect, 2-0 start with victories over Talladega College and FAMU, 101-81 and 79-50 wins, respectively. Amber Leggett, a junior forward, is leading the Troy offense with 24.5 points per game and is collecting 7.5 boards per contest. Â
Radio Waves
This will be the first game of the season that will be broadcasted on the radio. Rick Cameron, the "Voice of the Bears," will provide the play-by-play on 100.9 The Creek.
