Bears head to Mexico to continue Cancun Challenge

Mercer will play Bucknell and MTSU/Rider.
CANCUN, Mexico. –  The Mercer Bears will play their second game of the 2021 Cancun Challenge, as they are set to face the Bison in Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. This will be the 13th year of the men's Cancun Challenge. It's the ninth time the event has been played at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Since its inception in 2008, the tournament has hosted 80-plus D-I teams from 28 conferences, while playing over 100 games in Mexico.Â

The Bears are coming off a 58-75 loss against Saint Louis in Chaifetz Arena on Saturday night. Three players reached double-digits in scoring with Johnson (16), Alvarez (15), and Haase (13). The Bears were quick on defense, recording nine steals. Johnson found himself back at the line again and shot 7-for-9 from the charity stripe and made three from deep. Felipe Haase is averaging 18 points per game and has gone 14-for-23 from 3-point range on top of that. Mercer is 1-0 against Bucknell.Â

Bucknell has won eight Patriot League regular-season titles in a nine-year span from 2011-19, and the Bison went to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018 during that stretch. This year Bucknell is trying to rebound from its back-to-back sub-.500 seasons.
