
Bears Drop a Close One at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mercer women's lacrosse team fell to the High Point Panthers, 11-13, Sunday afternoon in High Point, N.C.
Both teams started the game of hot, each scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes. Junior Hailey Rhatigan scored the first two goals for the Bears; both were free position goals. The Bears third goal came at 21:21 when sophomore Shannon Urey found the back of the net. Mercer's next goal would not come until 8:12. Graduate student Lily Morin cut the Panthers lead to one after scoring her first goal of the 2021 season. Less than two minutes later, Chloe Scheaffer would tie the game up at five goals each.
The Bears started the second half slow, allowing the Panthers to score three unanswered goals. Senior Cailey Thornburg scored the first and second goals for the Black and Orange in the second half to cut the deficit to three. In less than a minute, the Bears scored three to cut the Panthers lead to one. Lily Morin scored her second goal of the game, followed by Erin Degnan, and Sami Van Slyke. High Point answered with two to take a 13-10 lead. Freshman Maddi Koury would add to the Bears total with her first collegiate goal with 1:27 left in the game. Unfortunately, it was not enough. The Bears would lose 11-13.
