Bears go head to head against the Utes for the second time
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's lacrosse team will welcome the Utah Utes for a Saturday morning matchup at Five Star at 11 a.m.

SERIES HISTORY
This is the second meeting between the Bears and the Utes. The first time was back in 2019 when Mercer made the trip to Salt Lake City. Utah took to game 13-9. Michael Quinn and Michael O'Brien led the team with two goals each. Â

ABOUT THE BEARS
Sean Goldsmith made his 2021 debut against Jacksonville on Saturday. During his time on the field, he found the back of the net twice. Will McCarthy is currently leading the team with 13 goals, followed by Collin Stewart with 11. Ashton Wood has been Mercer's go to face-off man, winning 103 of 169 face-offs. He has also picked up 59 groundballs on the season so far. Danny Walsh is the lone Bears with double digit caused turnovers with 11 on the season. Wood also leads the Southern Conference in groundballs per game. He is averaging 8.43 groundballs per game. Goalie Colin Kelley has started all seven games in the cage and has saved 84 balls from getting past him.

Utah enters the game coming off a 18-5 win over Westminster on Saturday. In the game, Jordan Hyde and Peter Hagan led the Utes with three goals apiece. Midfielder Cole Brams snagged 11 groundballs in the game. Four goalies saw time in the cage for the Utes. Zion Dechesere started in between the pipes and had four saves. Connor Hollison and Bryce Cheek had one save each, while Zack Johns had none. Tyler Bradbury and Jordan Hyde are the only Utes to have double digit goals on the season with 10. Head coach Brian Holman enters his third season at the helm of the Utes and his fifth with the program overall.

- Junior Sean Goldsmith made his 2021 debut against Jacksonville, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist.
- Each week, a new Mercer player wears the No. 24 uniform in honor of Mercer signee John Michael Night. Before he could enroll at the University, Night sufÂfered a devastating brain stem stroke leaving him in what is medically referred to as Locked-In Syndrome (LIS). Â
- Ashton wood in ranked in the top five in the nation for groundballs per game. His average of 8.43 per game puts him in the number five spot in the nation and in the number one spot in the Southern Conference.
- As a team, the Bears are eighth in the country for caused turnovers per game. The Black and Orange are averaging 10.14 per game which puts them second din the conference. They are behind VMI who averages 12.00 per game. The Bears and the Keydets will go head to head later this season.
