Lily Morin led with five goals
MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the season with a 17-14 final over the Winthrop Eagles in Five Star Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Bears were off to a slow start in the game, not scoring their first goal until the 18:03 mark. It was Erin Degnan who found the back of the net with an unassisted goal. Winthrop would score one more to make the score 6-1. The Bears would retaliate with an 8-0 run. Eva Thorn started the run with a goal, assisted by Lily Morin. Degnan scored her second goal of the game, assisted by freshman Maddi Koury. Koury didn't want to only record assists, so she scored a goal at the 8:03 mark to cut the Eagles lead to two. Two minutes later, Lyndsey Lewis snuck one past Winthrop to score her first goal of the season. Less than 25 seconds later, Maddi Koury scored her second goal of the game to tie it up at six. Sophomore Shannon Urey would score her first goal of the game one minute later to give the Black and Orange the lead. The Bears last two goals of the half would come from Lewis and Morin to give Mercer the 9-7 lead at the half.
Â
Senior Katie Ryan opened the Bears scoring 5:04 in the second half with her first goal of the season. Koury was right behind her with her third goal. The Bears continued their momentum with two more goals from Morin and Kayla Soltys. Soltys' first goal of the season would give Mercer their largest lead of the game so far with five goals. Winthrop closed the lead to four but Morin's back to back goals made the lead six in Mercer's favor. The Eagles would score three unanswered goals to close the gap to three. Urey's free position goal would give the Black and Orange their four-goal lead. Graduate Lily Morin would score the Bears last goal of the game unassisted at 7:30.
