Mercer fell to UNCG, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team was edged by UNCG, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon in Southern Conference action at the UNCG Tennis Center.

The Bears took an early lead in doubles as Lekha Varudandi and Mary Courville defeated Tayah Cross and Emily Ory, 6-2. After Mercer won the first doubles match of the day, the Spartans battled back and took the next two matches to claim the doubles point.

The Bears tied the match early in singles play as Alara Hollyfield defeated Sophia Adams, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to give the Bears their first point of the day. Mercer took a 2-1 lead after Ashley Popham won 6-1, 6-2, over Tayah Cross on court six.

The match was tied at two following the Spartans win at No. 5 singles, and UNCG regained the lead after a win in the third flight. Mercer needed to take the final two singles matches to win, and Vardandi gave the Bears momentum with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 win in the fourth flight.

With the match even at three, the Bears were unable to earn a victory in the final match of the day, as the Spartans claimed the win with a victory at No. 1. Mercer's Mary Couville dropped the first set and battled in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker, but she was unable to win the set and dropped the match.
