
Bears Drop a Heartbreaker Against Chanticleers

CONWAY, S.C. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team fell to Coastal Carolina, 11-10, with a heartbreaking last second goal on Friday afternoon.
The Bears went down early in the game with Coastal Carolina taking a 3-0 lead. Hailey Rhatigan scored the Bears first two goals of the game. Each came within a minute of each other. The Chants answered with a goal at the halfway mark of the first half. The longest scoring lull of the game came to an end at the 3:54 mark when Rhatigan scored her third goal of the game. Her goal would cut Coastal's lead to one. Lyndsey Lewis would earn a free position shot with less than a minute to go in the first half. She found Shannon Urey coming from behind the goal to get one in and tie the game at four goals each. Iseabal Cryne registered three saves in the first half with a .429% save percentage.
The Bears wasted no time in the second half getting on the board. Lily Morin scored her first goal of the game less than two minutes in the second half. Coastal Carolina answered with a goal two minutes later. The Black and Orange wouldn't let the game be tied for long. Erin Degnan caught the Chants defense and got one past the goalie for her first goal of the game. Rhatigan would prove to be too much for Coastal Carolina's defense. Her fourth goal would come at the 22:20 mark to give the Bears a 7-5 lead. A foul would send Rhatigan to the 8-meter line where she would add to her total and the Bears lead. Lyndsey Lewis found the back of the net for her first goal of the game and the Bears ninth. The Chanticleers ended the Bears 3-0 scoring run with a goal at the 16:22 mark. The Chants got another goal past the Bears to cut the lead to two. After Coastal cut the lead to one, Hailey Rhatigan scored her sixth goal of the game to grow the lead back to two. A late goal by the Chants would cut the lead back to one. With less than a minute left, the Chants tied the game a 10 each. Coastal Carolina scored with 11 second left in the game to give the Chanticleers the game.
NOTABLES
·      Sami Van Slyke led the Bears with three ground balls in the game. Haley Gerold and Ainsley Malamala capped off the multi-ground ball game with two.
·      Lily Morin won six draw controls on the afternoon. Erin Degnan followed with three, Kayla Soltys with two, while Haley Gerold, Rhatigan, Hannah Lind, and Van Slyke had one.
·      Morin also led with two caused turnovers.
·      Iseabal Cryne saw all 60 minutes in the cage. During her time, she stopped five balls.
