Both players were named Second Team All-SoCon.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sean Goldsmith and Ashton Wood were named Second Team All-SoCon selections, the league office announced on Tuesday morning.
Goldsmith, a junior attack from Jamestown, N.C., made his season debut against Jacksonville on March 21. His return from an elbow injury went flawlessly as he made an immediate impact for the Orange & Black, scoring two times on seven shots and adding an assist. Less than a week later, in a 15-10 win over Utah, Goldsmith scored a season-high six goals. He scored nine times in three games in April and surpassed 100 career points in a 17-9 Southern Conference win over VMI, a game in which he scored three goals on 10 shots and dished out four helpers. He found the back of the net multiple times in all but one contest in 2021 and finished second on the team with 18 goals despite limited action. Goldsmith also involved his teammates, assisting on 10 goals.
Goldsmith is a two-time All-SoCon honoree, having won all-freshman honors in 2019. No awards were handed out in 2020 due to the coronavirus, but one could argue that he was on his way to winning SoCon Offensive Player of the Year honors. He led the country with 4.86 goals per game before the season was cut short. Goldsmith has played three seasons at Mercer and ranks sixth among NCAA Division I's career active leaders with an average of 2.92 goals per game. He holds numerous Mercer records including most points (10) and goals (7) in a game, and his104 career points place him tied for second in program history.
Wood, a junior face-off specialist from Saint Augustine, Fla., appeared in 12 contests with 12 starts. He scored five goals and added three assists in his third collegiate campaign. Wood found the back of the net in three consecutive contests from February 20 to March 6 and had a two-assist performance at Air Force on April 3.
Wood was nearly automatic in the face-off circle, winning 193 times in 307 attempts (.629). In the Southern Conference, only Wood and Richmond's Jacob Griffin won at least 60 percent of their faceoffs. He won 15 or more face-offs in 9-of-12 games and recorded 20 or more victories against VMI (April 24) and Bellarmine (May 1). Wood ranked 12th nationally face-off winning percentage. For his career, he has won 503 face-offs. In addition to his success with face-offs, Wood grabbed a SoCon-best and Mercer single-season record 120 ground balls and collected at least 10 ground balls in seven contests. His average of 10 groundballs per game placed him third among all NCAA Division I players behind only Lehigh's Mike Sisselberger (13.50) and Saint Joseph's Zach Cole (11.50). In three seasons, he has picked up 293 ground balls.
