Mercer Starts Season at Home with the Mercer Bears Classic

MACON, Ga.  – The Mercer Bears volleyball team will open their fall season with a tournament including a Friday double header against Stetson and New Hampshire and a Saturday game against Murray State. The Volleyball team will reveal the banner for their first Southern Conference Regular Season Championship before the first serve of the 6:00 p.m. Friday game.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first match-up between Mercer and both New Hampshire and Murray State. The last meeting between the Bears and the Hatters was in 2015 in favor of the Hatters, 2-3.

SCOUTING THE HATTERS
The Hatters finished the 2020 season with an overall record of 6-8. For the third consecutive season, the Hatters appeared in the ASUN Championship. Junior, Elena Djokovic leads the team with 164 kills and 177 points and was selected All-Conference Second Team and received Player of the Week recognition twice last season. Four newcomers were welcomed to the program this season. The Hatters are led by Yang Deng who is in her fifth season.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
The Wildcats finished their season with a 7-3 record both overall and within their conference. Abby Sullivan, senior middle blocker, is the active kill leader with 309 career kills in her first three seasons. Both Sullivan and Hannah Serbousek were All-Conference selections. The Wildcats have five new additions to the team. Head coach Christopher Feliciano enters his third season with the Wildcats.

SCOUTING THE RACERS
The Racers finished 5-11 in conference and regular season play. Becca Fernandez returns for her fifth year after receiving OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Fernandez and sophomore Jayla Holcombe, who led the team in kills last season (204) both were selected for Preseason All-OVC. The team welcomed four freshman and is led by Coach Dave Schwepker who enters his 24^th season.

NOTABLES

Mercer welcomes four new faces to the fall roster. Transfer Morgan Verheyen (Buffalo) and freshmen Emma Jose (Oakville, Ontario), Mykole Morgan (Lousiville, Ky.), and Paige Wagers (Lexington, Ky.).
Three Bears earned All SoCon honors – Jaida Howell and Annie Karle (All SoCon First Team) and Brittany Major (All-SoCon Second Team).
Howell and Karle were both selected to the Preseason All-SoCon Volleyball Team.
