SCOUTING THE BEARS
Mercer soundly put away Gardner-Webb, 4-0, to open the 2021 season at Betts Stadium Thursday evening. Junior midfielder, Dylan Gaither, recorded a hat trick, while Trevor Martineau, a senior forward, added a goal and an assist to secure the season-opening win. Michael Ille, Angel Gonzalez and Natnael McDonald also added assists. Brant Zulaf, a sophomore keeper, stopped four shots and picked up the win, playing all 90 minutes of the contest.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
A Sun Belt finalist a year ago, Georgia State fell to North Florida in their season-opener by a 3-1 margin. George Proctor – the reigning Sun Belt player of the Year – was absent from the contest due to a red card in last year's conference title match. The Ospreys used two PKs to put away the Panthers and take the win in Atlanta on Thursday evening. GSU's lone goal came just before half when Jordan Beam was assisted by Salar Faryar to cut UNF's lead in half.
