Mercer Returns to Betts Stadium on Sunday

The Bears will battle in-state rival Georgia Southern on Sunday at 6 p.m.
MACON, Ga. – After a tough draw on the road, the Mercer Bears will return to the friendly confines of Betts Stadium on Sunday evening for a 6 p.m. non-conference battle with in-state rival Georgia Southern.

SERIES HISTORY | LAST MEETING
Mercer picked up its eighth win over the Eagles last season with a 1-0 victory. Ally Fordham scored the match-winning goal off a pass from Aliah Kitchens in just the 10th minute. Jordyn Ebert stopped six shots in goal. While the Bears won the match in Statesboro last fall, the Eagles lead the series, 11-8-1.

The Bears went 1-0-1 last week and scored 12 goals. Mackenzie Gassie starred for the Bears in the 10-0 win over Mississippi Valley State with a hattrick, while Lana Whitfield scored twice and also added a pair of assists in the win. The Bears played from behind against the Blazers of UAB, but Cami Brown and Payton Schurr helped the Orange & Black earn a 2-2 draw. Brown equalized 57th minute, and Schurr scored off a pass from Whitfield with just 25 seconds remaining to force overtime. After the clock expired on a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, the Bears left Birmingham with a 2-2 draw. Gassie (3 goals) leads the Bears in scoring while Whitfield, Fordham and Schurr have each scored twice. Gassie and Whitfield are tied with a team-high seven points. In goal, Ebert has made 19 saves.

Georgia Southern is 3-2-1 overall and will host Stetson on Friday night before traveling to Macon for Sunday's contest. The Eagles are coming off a 1-0 loss to Jacksonville on Sept. 5. Georgia Southern's last win was a 1-0 triumph over The Citadel on Aug. 31. Megan Przybysz scored the match-winner in the 66th minute, and Michaela English made four saves in goal. Marcela Montoya paces the Eagles in points with four goals and one helper, and Elis Nemtsov is second with three goals and an assist for seven points.
