Bears’ Home Opener Set for Friday

MACON, Ga. – Tony Economopoulos' Mercer Bears will host Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 8 p.m. for their home opener before traveling west to Birmingham, Ala., to take on UAB on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. eastern time.

SERIES HISTORY | LAST MEETING
The lone meeting between the Bears and Delta Devils came in 2018, and Mercer earned a 5-0 victory. Four different Bears scored, but the lone player to score still on the roster is Payton Schurr. Schurr scored her second goal of the 2018 season in the 61^st minute of the match.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
Jordyn Ebert continues to lead the Bears in goal. The Suwanee, Ga., native has made 12 saves through three matches and is only allowing an average of one goal per match. Ebert made a season-high five stops in Sunday's contest against North Florida. Offensively, Schurr found the back of the net in the season opener against Georgia State, a 1-0 win for the Orange & Black on Aug. 19. Schurr has placed both her attempts on target through three matches. Freshman Lana Whitfield leads the Bears with six shots, four of which came Sunday in the loss to North Florida. She has placed four of her six shots on target. Junior Nicole Icen has also been accurate with both of her attempts being on goal.

SCOUTING THE DELTA DEVILS
Mississippi Valley State had its first two matches of the fall 2021 campaign postponed, and the Delta Devils opted out of the spring 2021 campaign. It has been nearly two years since Mississippi Valley State's women's soccer team took the pitch. The squad went 1-14-1 in 2019 with its lone win coming against South Carolina State, 3-2.

SERIES INFO | LAST MEETING
Mercer and UAB battled twice last season with the Blazers taking both matches, 2-1. The Bears are seeking their second win all-time over the Blazers.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
UAB is currently 1-3-0 overall with its lone win coming against Kennesaw State, 2-1, on Aug. 22. The quartet of Stella Kiss, Ava Martin, Jessica Wheeler and Laura Zemberyova have all scored while Kiss has added an assist to her statistics. In the victory over the Owls, Martin put UAB ahead in the 28^th minute, and Kiss added an insurance goal via a PK in the 61^st minute. Kennesaw State answered in the 69^th minute, but the Blazers' backline held steady and did not allow the Owls to equalize. In goal for UAB, Anika Toth is 1-1-0 with eight saves, and Eye Beyer is 0-2-0 with four stops.
