Mercer travels to UNCG, Western Carolina
MACON, Ga. – On the heels of the 17-point win over Chattanooga, Mercer (8-5, 1-0 SoCon) will venture to North Carolina for their first two SoCon road matchups of the season.

The Bears put away Chattanooga behind a 21-point fourth quarter and double-digit points from every starter in the opening game of the SoCon slate. Jaron Dougherty's 19 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals propelled Mercer to the win and was good enough for the league's Player of the Week honor. She is the only one to have received the nod three times this season.

The Bears and Spartans have met 17 times, and Mercer holds the 14-3 advantage in the series, including an 8-1 lead when played in Greensboro. A season ago, the Bears swept both meetings (both in Greensboro) with double figure decisions, 53-43 and 73-58.
Scouting the Spartans
UNCG opens conference play with Mercer, as they will have been idle for the past 22 days after finishing nonconference play with a 4-9 mark. Isys Grady, a freshman, paces the Spartans with 144 points, 57 converted field goals and 11.1 points per contest. The Spartans had two common opponents with Mercer this season, Gardner-Webb and Wake Forest.

WCU stands at 6-10, and 0-2 in conference play before their Thursday night duel with Samford. They dropped league contests to Wofford and Furman, both of which were on the road. Nadia Marshall leads the Catamounts with 179 points (11.2 per contest) and 113 boards, with 64 of those coming on the defensive end.

There will be plenty of new faces at Hawkins Arena for the 2021-22 season, as Mercer welcomes eight new student-athletes – Kinley Fisher, Endia Banks, Erin Houpt, Erin Gutierrez, Kassidy Jones, Nigeria Harkless, Ashlee Locke and Lauren McNamara-Clement – to campus.
