Battle To Scoreless Tie With Wofford
Macon Ga.—The Mercer Bears (4-2-5 overall, 0-0-1 SoCon) and the Wofford Terriers (3-5-2 overall, 0-0-1) battled to a scoreless tie in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Saturday night at Betts Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Each team played very cautiously in the first half, with not a lot of direct scoring chances. However, each goalkeeper did make some big plays coming off their lines to thwart chances. At the 15 minute mark Mercer's Brant Zulauf thwarted a dangerous attempt on a Wofford corner by Jakob Anderson, coming outside the six-yard box, leaping high in the air before any Terrier  could get a head on the ball. Later in the half at the other end, Wofford's Cameron Victor came way out of the goal, out to just inside the 18-yard box, punching the ball away on a long cross attempt by the Bears' Tommy Redd.
The second half saw more scoring opportunities. In the 60th minute, Mercer's Dylan Gaither moved smartly through three defenders and from about 15 yards out, let a left footed shot go that curled just outside the right goal post. Zulauf came up big on a couple of occasions. He grabbed a free kick through traffic, and was down momentarily in the 75th minute. He shook off the effects of the collision. With seven and a half minutes left, Nikolai Rotel, who's tied for the conference goal scoring lead with six, couldn't get his seventh, as Zulauf stopped him from point blank range.
NOTABLES
UP NEXT
The Bears step out of conference play and wrap up a seven-game homestand hosting Lipscomb on Tuesday Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. Wofford will visit SoCon foe, East Tennessee State on Saturday.
