Bisons End Bears Unbeaten Streak

Mercer Couldn’t Keep Up With The Jones
Macon Ga.—The nationally ranked Lipscomb Bisons ended the Mercer Bears unbeaten streak at five, with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Betts Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb (ranked 18 by College Soccer News and 23 by United Soccer Coaches) broke on top just past the 17-minute mark when Javanne Smith ripped a shot from the middle of the top of the 18-yard box, that beat Mercer goalkeeper Brant Zulauf to the upper right corner of the net.
The Bisons (9-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 ASUN) had a golden opportunity to increase the lead when the nation's leading scorer and goal scorer, Jeldrik Dallmann had a penalty kick. But Zulauf was able to make a kick save, and keep the deficit at one.
Mercer (4-3-5 overall, 0-0-1 SoCon) tied it in the second half when Dylan Gaither tracked down the ball after a long punt and moved to just about the same spot where Jones had scored earlier. But Gaither rifled it low to the left side past Lipscomb goalkeeper Michael Sibley for his fifth goal of the season.
Malachi Jones, a freshman who had assisted on Smith's first half goal, then took over the second half. He scored in the 71st minute when his shot from about 14 yards out, glanced off Zulauf's hand and just inside the right goal post. He struck again seven minutes later, winning a race to a loose ball at the penalty area line, nudged it past Zulauf, then rolled it into the wide open net, giving him two goals and an assist in the 3-1 win.
