Bears Have Second Straight SoCon Scoreless Tie
Greenville, S.C.—Two teams who appeared closely matched on paper showed they were evenly matched on the field as the Mercer men's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with Furman Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team generated much offense in the first half with the Bears (4-3-6 overall, 0-0-2 SoCon) attempting three shots, one of which was on goal. Furman (5-3-3 overall, 0-1-1 SoCon) manged just one shot off target.
Business picked up quickly in the second half. Just a half minute in, the Palladins' Luke Tandy received a yellow card caution. It was the first of three issued to Furman in the second half. Mercer's Ousman Jabang also received a caution. Furman attempted six second half shots and had some dangerous crosses and a close call off the crossbar, Bear's goalkeeper Trevor McMullen had to leap to make sure it stayed out of the net. With the clock winding down, the Bears nearly got the winning goal off a throw in, but the shot from the top of the six yard box was deflected away as the final horn sounded.
NOTABLES
The Bears wrap up a three game road trip with another SoCon match, at VMI on Oct. 15. Furman will have a non-conference game at Davidson on Oct. 12.
