Goals On Set Pieces Propel Bears To Win
Â
Lexington, Va.--Two goals directly off set pieces, led the Mercer Bears to a 2-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Oct. 15 at Patchin Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears (5-3-6 overall, 1-0-2 SoCon) controlled possession much of the first half against the Keydets (2-10-1 overall, 0-3-0 SoCon). Angel Gonzaelz had a backheel attempt thwarted by VMI goalkeeper Gabe Calhoun just four minutes into the game. Kadeem Agard headed a set up from Gonzalez just wide, five minutes later.
Mercer broke through when leading scorer Dylan Gaither placed a free kick beautifully to the top of the goal area box, and Nick Wanzer headed it in for a 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, Agard did head in a long throw in from Liam Coxhead, giving the Bears their 2-0 lead they held the rest of contest.
