Bears Take Fourth
Spartanburg, S.C.—Mercer golfer Tobias Jonsson continues his great fall season, setting a record by finishing -12 at the Carolina Cup Tournament which concluded Tuesday. Jonsson finished one shot ahead of Khavish Hardahan of Alabama-Birmingham.
UAB did set a team record, finishing -20, 10 shots better than runner-up Lipscomb. Mercer finished fourth at +4 for the 54-hole tournament.
Jonsson shot an opening round 70 then had consecutive rounds of five under 67 on the par-72 Carolina Country Club Course in his record setting performance. He had only three bogeys while recording 15 birdies over the three days.
Jonsson's 204 led the Bears, who got a 217 from Rece Moore; 224 from Gustav Sjoberg; 225 from Jonathan Parker; and 238 from Trey Mixon.
Monday's middle round, when the Bears shot a team score of 10-over 298, squashed hopes of a team title, after Mercer led after the first round.
"We need a team win," coach Jason Payne said, while delighted at Jonsson's medalist performance.
The Bears will have the chance for that team win, Oct. 17-18 in the Pinetree Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State.
