Bears Ready for Three Day Event
Macon, Ga.—Don't be fooled by the name…the No. 16th ranked Mercer football team is playing at VMI this weekend, but the Mercer Gridiron Classic will host tennis players Oct. 28-30.
The Bears are hosting their fall event after it was postponed due to Hurrican Ivan's impact on some of the participating schools. The Gridiron Classic takes place at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center, located in the South Bibb Recreation Center, 7035 Houston Road, in Macon. The center features 22 full size courts (all fully wheelchair accessible). Courts on the Mercer campus are currently being resurfaced.
"We've been able to put together a great event, even with the change of date," Bears' coach Eric Hayes said. "We're fortunate to have a nationally recognized facility like the Randy Stephens Center available."
There are no team scores kept during the tournament. Play will be in singles and doubles for both men and women. There are players from eight schools on the men's side, and eight schools as well on the women's side.
Play at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center will begin at 8:30 each morning. Results and schedule information is available at https://bit.ly/3W4vXZr.
