10/28/2022 11:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Lindsay Bell made five saves and Chandler Lewis-Jenkins scored the lone goal for the Bears
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mercer women's soccer team advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals after defeating ETSU in penalty kicks 3-2 on Friday night from the campus of Samford Univeristy.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer's (9-3-7, 4-1-4 SoCon) Aliah Kitchens had the first two shots on goal of the game for either team. Then, in the 27th minute, Chandler Lewis-Jenkins took a free kick near the top of the center circle on ETSU's side of the field. The ball bounced on the six-yard box and just missed the outstretched leg of Lena Dykes and found the back of the net past the Conference Player of the Year in ETSU's Shu Ohba.
The Bears would take a 1-0 lead into halftime, having an 11-3 lead in shots.
A little more than 10 minutes into the second half, the Bears had a couple of good chances to extend their lead to 2-0. Kendall Cook had a shot sail wide left and SoCon Freshman Player of the Year, Jada Moorman had a header hit the crossbar of a beautiful move and cross from Nicole Icen.
A few minutes later, in the 67th minute ETSU got the equalizer when Andjela Kricak scored on a left-footed shot from a few yards outside the top of the 18-yard box.
The closest either team would come to winning in regulation happened in the 89th minute when an ETSU player got a head on a cross, but Linday Bell made a great diving save to her right to keep the score tied at one.
After a scoreless 20 minutes of overtime with neither team generating many scoring chances, the game went to penalty kicks (best of five) to decide the winner.
Kendall Cook, Nicole Icen and Lana Whitfield converted on three of the first four penalty kicks for the Bears. Lindsay Bell saved a penalty kick and two ETSU players missed theirs to give Mercer a 3-2 advantage going into the fifth penalty kickers for each team. ETSU missed their penalty kick wide left and the Mercer Bears advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.
