Balanced Scoring and Lockdown Defense Carries Mercer to 72-37 Win over Georgia Southwestern State
11/20/2022 4:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Bears held GSW to 2-23 shooting in the first half
MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and lockdown defense to defeat Georgia Southwestern State 72-37 on Sunday afternoon from Hawkins Arena.
The Bears held Georgia Southwestern State to 2-23 (9 %) from the floor in the first half and led 32-10 at the break. "I thought in the first half we were exceptional on defense," said coach Gardner. "Part of when you play defense and they are missing shots is you need to rebound, and Brittany Reeves did an exceptional job, she had nine rebounds in the first half and that gives us a chance to run." Four different Mercer players had multiple steals in the game.
Mercer outscored the Lady Hurricanes 48-22 in the paint. The Bears got 33 points from their bench.
Brittany Reeves had her first career double-double, scoring a career-high 15 points to go with 11 rebounds. Nigeria Harkless tied her career-high with 11 points and she pulled down four rebounds to go with three assists. Summah Evans made her first six shots from the floor and had 13 of her 15 points in the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer started the game on an 18-2 run in which five different Bears scored during the run. Mercer held GSW to just four points and one made field goal in the first quarter.
Two lay ups by Nigeria Harkless in the opening minutes of the second quarter extended Mercer's lead to 22-4. Then, with the Bears leading 26-10 Summah Evans went on a 6-0 run herself, which included back-to-back steals for lay ups.
The Bears got balanced scoring throughout the game, but especially in the third quarter as six different players scored in the quarter. Reeves grabbed an offensive rebound and got the put back to fall, before a pair of made jump shots went for Jaron Dougherty and Summah Evans to extend Mercer's lead to 40-14.
Freshmen Detavia Salter and Maria Serracanta scored their first career points in the fourth quarter as each finished with four point on the afternoon.
COACH GARDNER ON BRITTANY REEVES
"She did a great job working [in practice]. She didn't play great versus Wake Forest and you have got to give her a lot of credit for bouncing back and preparing herself physically and mentally for this game."
COACH GARDNER ON BALANCED SCORING
"We also tried to establish some other players besides Amoria and Erin to not only be our primary scorers all the time. I thought Summah did a great job, in the first half she was 6-for-6, so pretty balanced scoring for us today."
