Hurtado Jr.’s Double-Double Not Enough at FGCU
12/10/2022 10:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
15 points and career-high 13 rebounds for the graduate transfer
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The third double-double of the season for Luis Hurtado Jr. could not propel the Mercer men's basketball program to a win against Florida Gulf Coast, falling 67-62 at Alico Arena on Saturday night. The Bears fall to 5-6 on the season.
The graduate transfer from Merida, Venezuela posted a career-high 13 rebounds along with a team-high 15 points and five assists. Hurtado Jr. recently tied his career high in rebounds with 12 against Kennesaw State in which he recorded his second double-double of the season.
"He [Hurtado Jr.] played 34 minutes and will probably keep doing that because he knows what he's doing," head coach Greg Gary said. "He has a high IQ, and I'm proud of him."
Three other Bears scored in double figures, including Jalyn McCreary in his ninth game with double-digit points this season. McCreary also finished with seven rebounds, one block, and one assist. Kamar Robertson and David Craig each notched 13 points against the Eagles.
"We did a good job fighting," Gary commented. "That's what I told the guys - we've got some great fight to us. We're going to continue to do that, we've just got to clean up some things offensively."
Both teams were 21-52 from the field. Mercer shot 80% from the free throw line compared to FGCU's 71.4%, but the Eagles reached the line more than the Bears, going 20-28 contrasting Mercer's 16-20.
"We had the same total field goals attempted, so if we take more of those our way, we have more opportunities to score and put them on defense more," Gary added.
The first half was fairly even as FGCU led by no more than six for the first ten minutes, and Mercer led for most of the remainder of the first half. The Eagles took a one-point lead into halftime, 26-25.
FGCU dominated out of halftime as the Bears surrendered four turnovers to start the half. Nevertheless, Mercer fought back to take the lead behind a quick five points from Robertson.
"First half we held them to two transition points; second half we gave up 16," Gary explained. "That's the game right there. In our first six or seven possessions of the second half, we had five turnovers. You just can't do that against good teams in their house."
The lead alternated throughout the second half with FGCU primarily ahead. Hurtado Jr. led the team in the end, scoring 11 of the Bears' final 13 points of the night. The Eagles continued to sink shots, leaving Mercer's comeback attempt just short.
UP NEXT: The Mercer men's basketball program will host Morehead State at Hawkins Arena on Saturday, December 17 at 2 p.m.
