SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE
The Eagles were picked to win the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2022-23 preseason polls. Morehead State fell in the conference championship last year but still posted its third-straight 20-win season under head coach Preston Spradlin. Senior guard Mark Freeman was the lone Eagle to be named to the preseason All-Conference team.
Two Eagles stand out in scoring for the squad this season with Alex Gross averaging 12.8 points per game and Freeman logging 12.1 points per game. Gross also leads the team in rebounds with 78 total, averaging 7.1 per game.
Morehead State is 6-5 to start the season. This record includes wins over three non-Division I programs along with Bellarmine, ETSU, and Georgia Southern. The Eagles managed to hold on for a win over Georgia Southern on Wednesday despite not scoring a field goal in the final 9:35 minutes. The losses came against Indiana, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Marshall, and North Alabama.
RECENT ACTION
With final exam week happening at Mercer, the Bears have not competed since Saturday at Florida Gulf Coast. It was a close game, with neither team accumulating more than a seven-point lead, but Mercer fell in the end, 67-62.
Luis Hurtado Jr. recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. His 13 rebounds set a new career-high for the graduate transfer. For the second time this season, Hurtado Jr. logged at least 10 defensive rebounds, a feat which had not been accomplished once by a Mercer player since December 2021 by Jalen Johnson.
