Mercer defeats Cleveland State, snaps skid
CLEVELAND - Six unanswered goals in 14 minutes was the difference Mercer needed in their third straight game away from the comforts of Five Star Stadium. Those six carried the Bears (2-3) over Cleveland State (1-1) in an 11-9 game in the Vikings' Krenzler Bubble, which broke a three-game skid.
Daniel Shumake's hat trick led the way for Mercer's offense in Ohio as Ashton Wood, Matthew Winegardner and Khory Reid followed up with a pair of goals each.
Wood, a preseason All-SoCon nominee, scooped six groundballs. Collin Kelley – the winning goalkeeper – claimed four for himself. Between the pipes, Kelley stopped 18 shots in the sixty minutes played.
In the game's first 13 minutes, the Vikings and Bears traded goals and neither side could pull away until Mercer found a 10-7 lead with just 11:57 left in the contest.
As a team, Mercer picked up 33 of the game's 61 ground balls and took home a clear percentage of 95.6% (22-for-23) on the day.
Mercer will be back in action on March 5th when they will welcome Robert Morris to Macon. Faceoff with the Colonials is set for 11 a.m.
