Cryne's 14 saves not enough versus USC
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell to visiting USC on Sunday afternoon by a 15-7 margin in the second game for the Bears.
Hailey Rhatigan led the Mercer (1-1) offense with 4 points (2 G/2 A), while Erin Degnan and Shannon Urey also notched two goals apiece. After finding themselves down to the Trojans (3-0) 5-0, Rhatigan's strike came at an opportune time while the Bears had the woman advantage on USC.
Urey fired the lone Mercer goal of the third quarter, which was assisted by Rhatigan with just 1:30 left in the period to close their deficit to eight. Just over four minutes later in the fourth, Rhatigan drove a shot past Kait Devir for her final goal of the contest. Off the ensuing draw win, Rhatigan fed Emily Barnes, who notched the score to bring the Bears within seven.
Big South preseason all-conference selection, Isea Cryne, stopped 14 shots from USC in her first loss of 2022.
Next Sunday, Feb. 27, the Bears will venture up interstate 75 to face Kennesaw State on the road. Opening draw against the Owls from Fifth Third Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
