Jonsson Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time this season, Tobias Jonsson, was selected as the SoCon Player of the Week.

Last week in road contests, the Huddinge, Sweden native played an instrumental role in Leading  the Bears in both tournaments played this season. Jonsson led the Bears at Francis Marion's Wexford Intercollegiate tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Feb. 21-22, posting a 4-under-par 212 performance to finish first.

The sophomore opened the tournament with a first-round score of 1-under 71 on Monday before shooting another round of 1-under 71 in the second round later that day. Jonsson shot a 2-under par 70 in the final round, which included four birdies, to seal the victory and finish just ahead of teammate Martin Plukka and Francis Marion's Mitchell Vance. With the win, Jonsson picks up his first victory of the season and is currently ranked 36th nationally.

Mercer finished tied for fourth in the 17-team, 90-golfer field, concluding the tournament with a 9-over 871 performance to tie with East Carolina. The Bears shot 292 in the first round, 283 in the second, and 297 in the final round, earning wins over USC Aiken (-5), Radford (-4), Temple (+4) as well as Dayton (+5)

Mercer returns to the green on March 9^th to compete against Furman in an all-day event in Graniteville, South Carolina.
