Mercer takes 6-1 decision against The Citadel
MACON, Ga. - The Mercer men's tennis team snapped a skid to take a 6-1 decision in their penultimate match at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon in Macon.Â
The Bears (7-10, 1-2 SoCon) started slowly in doubles before roaring back to take the point. Samuel Macleod and Andrew Branicki lost the opener at No. 2, but Alexandr Koliev and Marceau Fouilhoux took a 6-2 win at No. 3 to make the result on No. 1 be the break for the match's first point. Lucas Wayenburg and David Georgadze won a 6-4 battle to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, The Citadel leveled the score at 1 with a straight-set win at No. 5, but it was all Mercer after that.Â
Macleod won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 to start a run of the remaining five to take control. Wayenburg and Fouilhoux gave Mercer a 3-1 lead with identical 6-4, 6-1 wins on 1 and 4 to clinch the match. Koliev's 6-2, 7-5 win at 6 and Georgadze's three-set triumphed capped off a strong day for the Orange & Black.Â
Mercer will wrap up the home slate and honor seniors tomorrow against Furman.Â
