Mercer falls 4-1 to Furman

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mercer saw its season in heartbreaking fashion, falling 4-1 to Furman, in the SoCon Men's Tennis Tournament in Chattanooga on Thursday evening.

Despite Furman taking the first doubles match at No. 3, Andrew Branicki and Samuel Macleod fought hard in a 7-5 defeat at No. 2 to give the Paladins the point. Lucas Wayenburg and David Georgadze went unfinished at No. 1 but in a deadlocked 5-5 match.

Furman jumped to a 2-0 lead following a straight-set win at No. 6, but Wayenburg countered with a 6-2, 6-3 win of his own to bring the Bears within one. Mercer had their backs against the wall when the Paladins' Jamie Connel claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Georgadze for the 3-1 lead. Furman clinched the match when Marceau Fouilhoux fell 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 at No. 3.

When the result was clinched, the Bears' Andrew Branicki held a 6-3, 5-2 lead on No. 5 and Macleod was on his way to a decisive third set on No. 4.

Mercer will finish the season with a 7-15 mark and a 1-6 record in league play.
