Mercer And Georgia State Battle To A Physical Stalemate
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer (4-1-2) scored early as Elizabeth Hargis cleared a pass up the right wing for Mackenzie Gassie who raced after the ball and struck a beautiful cross to the top of the 18-yard box. Aliah Kitchens tracked it down, and promptly drove it home for her second goal of the season.
With five and a half minutes left, Georgia State's (4-1-3) Jospeha Vercammen was able to split the Mercer defense and from just outside the six-yard box blasted it past Lindsay Bell to tie the game at one.
Seven minutes into the second half. The Panthers' Callee Maughon knocked down a Bears clearing attempt on the left side of the 18-yard box, and after a quick settle, launched a shot that sailed across the goal into the upper right corner for a 2-1 Georgia State lead.
With seven minutes left, Mercer's Kylie Buchanan was tripped just inside the top of the Panthers' penalty area, and Kendall Cook converted the penalty kick for her fourth goal in the last two games, and a 2-2 tie.
