Mercer Blanks Georgia Southern, 1-0
Macon Ga.—The Mercer Bears (4-2-4 overall, 0-0-0 SoCon) blanked the Georgia Southern Eagles (1-8-0 overall, 0-2-0 Sun Belt) 1-0 Tuesday night at Betts Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears pressured Georgia Southern much of the game, and forced a ricochet off an Eagle defender in the seventh minute of the second half for the game's only goal. Ousman Jabang carried the ball into the right side of the 6-yard box and crossed a pass to the middle of the goal. Eagle defender Alex Smith slid to break up the pass. But the ball glanced off his left foot past goalkeeper Dagoberto Romero.
Although the first half ended scoreless, the Bears created some dangerous scoring opportunities. In the 17th minute Dylan Gaither nearly put Mercer on top when his free kick from outside the upper left corner of the 18-box hit the left goal post. With just under 10 minutes left in the half, Angel Gonzalez sent a corner kick across the Eagles goal mouth, and Sekou Agard headed it toward the goal but Romero was able to make the save.
