The Mercer women's basketball team handed conference foe Samford its first conference loss of the season in a 70-63 win on Saturday afternoon from Hawkins Arena.
Four Bears scored in double figures led by freshman Enjulina Gonzalez who continues to build her confidence following her 34-point performance last time out against Chattanooga, as Gonzalez led the Bears with 18 points, going 8-for-16 from the field, with six rebounds and four assists.
Erin Houpt, Ashlee Locke and Summah Evans all had 11 points on the afternoon for the Bears. All three of Houpt's made field goals were from three-point range. Locke scored nine of her 11 points in the second quarter and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
Mercer held Samford to just 21-for-65 (31.3%) from the field for the game.
SCOUTING WOFFORD
Samford is coming off a 17-14 season in 2021-22. The Terriers went 11-3 in conference play. The Terriers were picked to finish second in the eight team league in the preseason coaches poll.
Wofford has the No. 1 scoring offense in the SoCon at 69.4 points per game. However, in conference play that number has dipped to 61.0 points per game.
The Terriers have the No. 1 scoring defense in conference play as they are giving up just 57.0 points per game.
Wofford has struggled from the free-throw line in conference play as they are shooting just 62.7 percent from the line, ranking last in the SoCon. The Terriers also rank last in the SoCon in rebounding margin as they have a -6.4 rebounding margin in conference play.
Wofford has three players averaging double-figures in scoring - Rachel Rose (15.2 ppg), Jackie Carman (14.8 ppg), and Lilly Hatton (10.5 ppg).
Rose does a lot for the Terriers as she leads them in most shooting categories, as well as rebounds, assists and steals.
Forward Lilly Hatton has picked up her game in conference play, averaging 12.4 points per game and ranks sixth in the conference in rebounds per game at 7.4 per game.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 23rd meeting all-time between Mercer and Wofford. Mercer leads the series 20-2.
STANDOUT STAT
Over her last two games, freshman Enjulina Gonzalez is shooting 56.8 percent from the floor, with at least eight made field goals in each game.
