Putter, Barrow Tally Singles Victories On Day 1 Of Gridiron Classic

MACON – Seniors Victor Putter and Samuel Barrow both registered singles victories to advance through to the semifinal round of their respective flights and highlight action for the Mercer men's tennis team on opening-day action at the 10^th Annual Mercer Gridiron Classic on Friday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.

Putter surrendered just one set in easing past Flagler's Asher Willenborg in his Flight B opener, while Barrow toughed out a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alabama State's Lun Obrol in Flight C action. Graduate student Andrew Branicki dropd a tough 7-5, 3-6, 1-6 bout with Flagler's Makary Adamek, while sophomore Howell Burns was on the wrong end of a straight-sets result with Matteo Lataste of Alabama State.

The Orange & Black ran into a bit more of tough luck in Saturday's doubles action as evidenced by a pair of 8-6 setbacks to Middle Georgia State duos. Putter and Barrow fell to MGSU's Adria Pratdepadua and Martin Carrizo, while Burns/Branicki succumbed to Samyak Bajracharya and Daniel Garcia.

The 3-day Mercer Gridiron Classic will continue on Saturday with two rounds of singles play. Sunday's schedule features lone rounds of both singles and doubles action. Admission to the event is free.
