Women's Basketball Hosts Florida Atlantic In Home Opener Thursday

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's basketball team welcomes Florida Atlantic to Hawkins Arena Thursday night in the Bears' home opener. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 24th meeting all-time between Mercer and Florida Atlantic. Mercer leads the series 14-9, and the Bears are 10-1 against the Owls in Macon.

SCOUTING FLORIDA ATLANTIC
Florida Atlantic women's basketball is in its first season in the American Athletic Conference after previously playing in Conference USA. Last season, the Owls finished 12-18 overall, including 5-15 in CUSA play. The Owls were just 3-11 away from home.

Thursday's game is the season opener for Florida Atlantic. Last season the Owls averaged 61.8 points per game and allowed 66.9 points per game. That ranked eighth and fourth in CUSA respectively.

Sophomore guard Aniya Hubbard was named to the AAC Preseason All-Conference Second Team.

LAST TIME OUT
In a back-and-forth, close, competitive game in the season opener between Mercer and Western Kentucky, the Lady Toppers came out with a 70-64 win over the Bears Monday evening in E.A. Diddle Arena.

Three Mercer players led the team with 15 points each on the night in Mackenzie Johnson, Stacie Jones, and Briana Peguero. Sophomore Aspen Johnson was the other Mercer player in double figures in scoring with 11.

The Bears did an excellent job on the glass as they outrebounded Western Kentucky 48-35 in the game. That included a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a 20-8 edge in second chance points for the Bears.

NEED TO KNOW
Stacie Jones had a career-high 16 rebounds, including eight offensive boards for the Bears in the season opener at Western Kentucky.
