
Bears Open Conference Play with Weekend Pair

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis program (6-6) will begin Southern Conference play with a pair of matches at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center this weekend. The match on Saturday, March 18 against Chattanooga has been moved to 12 p.m. The Bears will face Western Carolina on Sunday, March 19 at 11 a.m.

RECENT ACTIONÂ
The Bears are coming off a tough loss to Georgia on Tuesday. Georgia is ranked third in the nation with two of the three doubles teams ranked and five of the six singles players ranked.Â

Mary Weston Courville forced three sets against No. 12 Dasha Vidmannova at the second singles slot. Courville took the first set 6-4, dropped the second 6-1, and was ultimately defeated in the 10-point tiebreak, 10-5. Teodora Ristic played against No. 10 Lea Ma at the first singles slot. Ristic put up a fight in the first set, narrowly falling 7-5 and was defeated in the second set 6-1.Â
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA
The Mocs entered the ITA national rankings at No. 70 on February 21 but fell out the following week. Chattanooga saw an eight-match win streak snapped with just the second loss of the season against Austin Peay on Saturday. This will be the first conference match for both sides.
The team had five starters and seven letterwinners return from last season while welcoming three newcomers. Jessie Young, who plays in the first singles slot, has not won a match since February 26 against Tennessee Wesleyan. She lost 6-1, 6-1 to Austin Peay, 6-0, 6-2 to Troy and went unfinished against Jacksonville State.

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINAÂ
The Catamounts went 2-5 in conference play last season and WCU opened SoCon play this season with a 5-2 loss to Furman. More recently the team is on a three-match winning streak versus Seton Hall, UNC Wilmington and Loyola Maryland.
Madison Schwarz and Angela Perez started at the doubles one slot, going 2-1 in the last three matches with a loss to UNCW. Isabella Sambola played at the singles one slot and has not lost since the match against Presbyterian in the beginning of the month and holds a 7-6 record this season.Â
